Charles Borthwick RIBA RIAS chartered architect

about me I have more than 25 years experience working in
private practice in the UK and abroad on a wide
variety of projects including industrial buildings,
hotels, health care buildings, offices, retail
superstores, bridges, mixed-use/residential
developments and private houses.

Now as a sole practitioner I concentrate mainly on
small commercial and domestic work including
new build projects, extensions, conversions and
refurbishments including alterations to listed or
historic buildings.

I studied at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of
Art in Dundee including a year of practical training
in South Africa before qualifying and moving to
London where I lived and worked for 20 years,
initially gaining experience with Ian Pattie
Associates and Andrews Downie before settling at
Lifschutz Davidson where I reached the level of
Associate Director.

I returned to Scotland to set up my own practice in
2007 and am currently based in Dunfermline.

My design influences are ever evolving but I try not
to be overly influenced by style or fashion trends
preferring to concentrate on pragmatic solutions
that respond to brief and purpose. My work by
desire however is contemporary, responding to
context and place with a preference to use local
materials and passive solutions that are sustainable
but always open to innovation and technology
where appropriate. This does not preclude me
from responding to the demands of a more
traditional approach, for example, in conservation
areas or in the case of work to listed buildings.
